Backing up ROM

So I'm new to the Android scene...

Atrix
Androind ver:  2.3.4
Kernel ver:  2.6.32.9-00001-g41bc3e0
                    fpgh48@ca25rhe87 #2
Build ver:  4.5.91

rooted via Pete's Motorola Root Tools v.1.06
The tool installed:
Superuser v.2.3.6.1

I then installed:
ROM Manager v.4.5.0.1 w/ Flash ClockworkMod Recover v.5.0.2.0
EleGoS ROM Updater

To the point:
I want to backup my ROM.
With either program, ROM Manager or EleGos ROM Updater, my ATRIX reboots and I get the screen with the Droid logo and a skewed yellow exclamation point in a yellow triangle.
The only way out of this is to pop the battery out, put it back in and then manually reboot.
Rebooting then goes well but I still don't have a backup!

Any ideas?

    I'm having the same problem, but when I do press the volume keys, and select any of the options, it gives me the message saying its booting into my selection, but nothing ever happens. I used the same root tool as the op but the phone refuses to boot into anything other than the android os.

   Are there any other techniques or tricks etc that will allow my uncooperative phone to boot into an alternate mode ie recovery?
