Backlight broken won't turn on

Hello, I have recently discovered that the backlight on my screen will not turn on.  The phone functions otherwise, if I hold it at the right angle and under heavy light I can view it, however, the backlight seems to have died.  Any tips / tricks to software issues that might be causing it, or ways that I could replace the hardware if need be?  I realize replacing the hardware would void the warranty, but I like to mess around with my electronics and am cool with voiding warranties.
